What's the Time?

I know that the /time command gives the current system time (as well as GMT) but could it be changed (or supplemented) to also show the cities (ie east/west coast US, London, Sydney, Perth, Eastern Europe etc) so that I don't have to do the maths at 3am when I'm tired? lol

Or what about adding options to the command so that I can type "/time London" and see the current UK time (as opposed to GMT)?

This sounds like a good idea, if we could somehow have a global clock coded or linked in somehow.

i like it, it would be very helpfull to have

Post 4 by TylerK (This site is so "educational") on Friday, 06-Apr-2007 18:33:34

I'm not sure about this one...I haven't heard of any way (using HTML, that is) to code a global clock. But maybe PHP might yield the answer, but that's up to Chris N and JJ.

This idea sounds great, I'm all for it if it can be done.

Are you actually able to change the time settings??? if not what is the curerent board time settings on?

Post 7 by Dusty (This site is so "educational") on Sunday, 08-Apr-2007 15:17:25

i don't think users can change the time and system time is set to EST (Eastern) i believe

Post 8 by blbobby (Ooo you're gona like this!) on Friday, 20-Apr-2007 6:50:52

It would be kind of neat if the system would go out and get your regional settings instead of eastern standard time.

Like this idea.

Yeah, I like this idea. Though judging by the fact that this topic was started almost 3 years ago, i'm not sure if there's a way to implement it. Personally, as i've suggested before, i'd like to see a combo box under account settings that would let you select your timezone, then all times displayed on the site would change to your timezone. But again, i'm guessing there was no way of implementing it.

Yes, I do like this idea too, if it can be easily implemented.

I'll pass this on to J and Chris, and see if they think they can implement it or not.

I thgouht I responded the last time this came up, but maybe not? The reason it hasn't been done is because the way in which the site is coded for time won't easily allow this feature. Too bad though, it would be a cool thing to have. it would also be neat to see what time it is in other parts of the world, especially for those who aren't quite so familiar with such things. Sorry this can't be done for now.

yeh, I'm also one of those ones who find it hard to calculate, especially late at night or early in the morning, Lol

What the f...? I thought I killed this thread! *stabs topic repeatedly with a toothpick*

Funnily enough since I started using places like the Zone I can pretty much do time-zone conversions in my head, but would be interested to see what can come of this excellent suggestion!

In which case I've left the topic with a faint pulse, so it can be resuscitated if necessary *grin*

J responded to us on the staff list. He says its something they've wanted to do, but it a coding nightmare, because of the way they've coded the site's time in the past. Basically what I gather from all that is that it would take a major coding overhaul that neither has the time for right now. But they do think it's a good idea, so who knows?

Post 17 by Big Pawed Bear (letting his paws be his guide.) on Wednesday, 27-Jan-2010 7:51:57

i typed in the time command and got EST and gmt.

Post 18 by OceanDream (An Ocean of Thoughts) on Thursday, 28-Jan-2010 7:50:12

What is GMT?

Post 19 by rdfreak (THE ONE AND ONLY TRUE-BLUE KANGA-KICKIN AUSIE) on Thursday, 28-Jan-2010 19:31:57

Lol Dusty, no topics are at the risk of dying around here. Having said that, I actually didn't bring it up again! Lol :)

Post 20 by Big Pawed Bear (letting his paws be his guide.) on Friday, 29-Jan-2010 12:11:33

gmt is greenwich mean time, the gold standard of time keeping.

Post 21 by bluestar (captain ) on Tuesday, 09-Feb-2010 22:36:34

a simple javasckript clock would dothetrick since alljavasckript clocks show the timeof the user computer regardless of the surver settings .

Post 22 by Jage (Zone BBS, a decade of madness) on Saturday, 13-Feb-2010 0:16:40

Doing localized time for the boards, etc. is a nightmare as has been said, but adding some sort of global clock to the /time command may be much more doable.

Post 23 by TylerK (This site is so "educational") on Sunday, 21-Feb-2010 13:27:37

Is there any way to override the timezone setting in php.ini on a per-user basis? Perhaps by using the db, and if no tz is set in the db on a user record, defaulting to the ini_get() result for that setting?

Post 24 by CrystalSapphire (Uzuri uongo ndani) on Tuesday, 02-Mar-2010 11:19:15

It would be a coding nightmare but perhaps someday.
